In several Portuguese ports, more than 170 pounds of cocaine was found in banana boxes stemming from Colombia, official sources say.
An initial 55.9 kilos was found in an undisclosed location through collaboration between local police and the Unidad Nacional de Combate already Tráfico the Estupefacientes (UNCTE, the national narcotics brigade). Based on this finding, a further 118.7 pounds was discovered in banana boxes in other areas in central and southern Portugal.
Police believe that the recipients of the bananas were not aware of the drug traffic and therefore did not report it. Portugal is often a portal for drugs of South American origin. Hashish from North Africa is also common.
